The amount of rice needed to feed one person for one year was known as the koku- the standard unit of measure. Farmers made their tax payments using rice back then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, in the 1550s, when the Portuguese came to Japan, they preferred gold to rice &amp; the Koban became the coin of choice in the foreign trade.
