Are your rings Forged or Casted?

What is Forging method or Casting method?

Forging and Casting method are the professional lingo that we will use when introducing rings to our customer.

Both are two different methods of metal fabrication that are often used when molding a wedding band. Both processes have been around for thousands of years, but what are the differences between the two manufacturing methods?

How are they different ?

Forging and casting are two very different manufacturing methods. When something is cast, the material is heated above its melting temperature and poured into a mold where it solidifies. When something is forged it is physically forced into shape while remaining in a solid state – like stamping out gingerbread dough.

Forging ancillary effects of pounding, deforming and shaping the metal creates unique grain flow include the elimination of defects, inclusions, and porosity in the product. In other words, forgings are generally better for wedding bands as it allowing metal to retain its strength, lengthening the lifespan of the ring. The basics of why are pretty simple. When you melt metal to cast it, the grain size is free to expand. When it cools back to a solid, the grain structure is courser and more random, decreasing its strength.

However, if you’re looking for a more uniquely shaped ring, casting method allows for greater flexibility. What’s more, casting creates lighter rings so if you are not used to wearing jewellery, it could be something to consider for. Modifications of part designs and associated molds are comparatively easy and quick to execute.

Of course, whether a metal is forged or casted, what matters is how compatible the ring is on your finger. So head down to any of our outlets to feel it by yourself. Our sales associates are more than happy to guide you through the process.
