Many people would like to know how to choose carat diamonds when purchasing a wedding or engagement ring. In this article,  we will explain the basic knowledge about carat, the number of carat suitable for engagement ring, and how to buy a diamond ring.

Basic Knowledge! What is Carat?

The carat is a unit that represents the weight of a gemstone. One carat is 0.2 grams, and it is generally said that the higher the number of carats, the higher the rarity and the value. Also, carats are often confused with size, but even large gems with light weights have small carat numbers. It’s worth remembering that the price of gemstones is based on weight, not just size. However, in the case of commercialized diamond, there is no problem such as inclusion of impurities, so it can be said that size and weight are first proportional. As a result, the larger the carat number, the larger the diamond.

In fact, it is not uncommon for diamond jewelry stores to use the carat number as a symbol of size. Especially when it comes to processing methods such as “round brilliant cut”, it is safe to say that “carat number” is “a number that represents both weight and size”. Round brilliant cut is a processing method in which the diamond is shaved as a whole to prepare a rounded shape. It is a design that brings out the best brilliance of the diamond, so it is often used for engagement rings and wedding rings. When choosing a diamond for your ring, check its size and price based on carats.

Take note of 4Cs!

All else being equal, diamond price increases with carat weight, because larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable. But two diamonds of equal carat weight can have vastly different values (and prices) depending on three other factors within the 4Cs: Clarity, Color, and Cut. It’s important to remember that a diamond’s value is determined using all of the 4Cs, not just carat weight.

The color evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is based on the absence of color. A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue, like a drop of pure water, and consequently, a higher value. GIA’s D-to-Z color-grading system measures the degree of colorlessness by comparing a stone under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions to master stones of established color value.

Next, “Clarity” is a standard to see how transparent a diamond is. Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions’ and external characteristics called ‘blemishes.’ Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature, and position of these characteristics, as well as how these affect the overall appearance of the stone. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely. We often think of a diamond’s cut as shape (round, emerald, pear), but a diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. The biggest factor that determines the brilliance of a diamond is the cut. GIA’s diamond cut grades are only evaluated for 57-sided or 58-sided shapes called “round brilliant cuts” that are the most common type of engagement ring.

What is the right carat for an engagement ring?

The higher the carat, the higher the price of the diamond. Therefore, many people think that they want to give a diamond with a large carat number as an important gift such as an engagement ring. In fact, there was a survey that 93.6% of Japanese wear diamonds on their engagement rings. To make a bigger impression for the proposal, most people will choose a larger carat size for the diamond. However, since the engagement ring is a product that the recipient always wears on a daily basis, diamonds that are too large may be inconvenient. Gaze at the right size diamond and make your partner happy.

The average carat count for an engagement ring is 0.2ct to 0.4ct. Considering going out to work or going shopping with the engagement ring on, a slightly modest size would fit nicely. By the way, there is a questionnaire result in Japan that 34% of people choose 0.2ct to less than 0.3ct and 29% choose 0.3ct to less than 0.4ct. It seems that a minority of people give a large size of 0.5ct or more to their fiancée.

How to buy a diamond ring wisely

To ensure that you don’t fail to buy an engagement ring, start by stating your budget to the salesperson. If you have too much budget, you can get lost in choosing a ring. Also, there is a possibility that the trader will preferentially recommend a more expensive ring, which will result in an unreasonable expense. If you let them know in advance that you want to keep within this price range, the salesperson will do their best to recommend you the best product within your budget. The average diamond carat and price of an engagement ring is 0.3ct and costs around 300,000 yen. Then make it clear what you want to emphasize in diamond quality. If you want to choose a ring that meets all the “4C” of diamonds, it is difficult to find the ideal one. And you will not be able to come to terms with the budget. For example, if you want to stick to size, give the carat the highest priority and compromise other factors. Then you will be able to choose a large diamond within your budget and make a satisfying purchase.

Take note of the usual circumstances that your fiancée will wear the ring, is she a housewife or does she go to work every day? If she is a housewife, it does not make sense to buy a big diamond ring which will get in the way of her work. Whereas, if she goes to work every day and socialize with people, buying a big diamond ring would impress the people around her.

To find your perfect engagement ring

Diamonds are the royal road for engagement rings, which is why design and carat are abundant and tend to vary. The more you search for it, the more difficult it will be to know which one is good, and the more people will be troubled. In order to find the best engagement ring, it is important to see and select it with your own eyes. The brilliance of diamonds cannot be confirmed unless you look closely. We recommend that you visit the store and observe carefully.
