What makes a Pearl, a ‘Pearl’?

Often enough, when one decides to make a purchase on a pearl product, he or she will have the tendency to think whether the product is worth the price paid for. So, let’s us get a brief idea on how we come to have this tiny wonders of nature.

The only gem created by a living organism, pearl is the most magical nd feminine of all gems. Pearls are formed when an irritant, such as a bit of food, grain of sand, bacteria or even a piece of the mollusk’s mantle becomes trapped in the mollusk. This irritates the mollusk and to reduce irritation, the mollusk coats the intruder with the same secretion it uses for shell-building, i.e. nacre. This results in coating the foreign material with layer upon layer of shell material. That’s how a pearl is formed.

Cultivated seawater pearls such as Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian, are acquired using the same method too, though with a bit of human intervention.

To own a piece of pearl jewellery, one must appreciate how much effort and time is put in to produce it. From breeding the oysters to the culturing process and then onto the long wait to harvest them. The wait could take at least a year of growing the pearls inside the cultivated oysters for Akoya pearls and up to 4 years for South Sea and Tahitian pearls. Climate change and natural occurrences also plays a big part in the making of a pearl. Not forgetting that only a tin fraction of the nucleated oysters produces high quality pearls, thus making the natural gem even more precious.

The journey doesn’t stop there because next comes the sorting of these harvested pearls and the process of making them into the jewellery we see now. So as you can see, lots of time, effort and labour work goes into the making of a pearl.
