The Koban is a Japanese oval gold coin in Edo period feudal Japan. It is an early monetary unit, with the value equals to one ryō.
Before the mid-19th century, the Japanese economy was based largely on rice. The amount of rice needed to feed one person for one year was known as the koku- the standard unit of measure. Farmers made their tax payments using rice back then.
However, in the 1550s, when the Portuguese came to Japan, they preferred gold to rice & the Koban became the coin of choice in the foreign trade. With the Meiji restoration in 1868, a new series of coins was launched based on European currency systems & the koban was discontinued.
