The Golden South Sea Pearls are among the largest and most valuable pearls. It gets its warm and natural colour from the gold-lip variety of the Pinctada maxima, South Sea pearl oyster. Because of the large size of the host oyster, it is able to produce pearls with sizes ranging from 9mm to 20mm. To be able to produce such big size pearls needs more time for the pearl to be cultivated inside the oyster. It typically takes 2-4years to harvest the pearls as compared to 1-2 years for Akoya Pearls and under 2 years for Tahitian Pearls. The value of a golden South Sea pearl is heavily dependent upon the color; the deeper the golden color, the more valuable the pearl. Because of the size and relative scarcity of the pearl, these made the Golden South Sea Pearls very desirable and valuable.
