Pearls enthusiasts definitely knows what the best Akoya Pearls are, and they are called Hanadama. Hanadama, meaning “Flower Pearl”, represents the highest quality available in Japanese Akoya Pearls, certified by the Japan Pearl Science Laboratory.

For Akoya pearls to be certified as Hanadama pearls, shape of the pearl needs to be perfect round and surface exhibits minimal to no visible blemishes. (*Note : There are no perfectly flawless pearls in the world. As pearls are natural be it cultured or wild, do take note when sellers described their pearls to be flawless) Nacre thickness needs to be at least 0.4mm, have a very strong luster and pearls exhibits mirror reflection. Certification for Hanadama pearls can only be done for a strand of pearls, so be wary if someone tries to sell you their loose pearls as Hanadama.

The TEN-NYO is essentially a Hanadama but they are at the top of the grading scale. For a strand of pearls to be considered TEN-NYO, it must firstly be certified as Hanadama. Next comes the testing of the ‘Teri’ of the pearls to determine whether the strand of Hanadama pearls are worthy to be called TEN-NYO. Teri is the word for the light interference which occurs on the surface of the nacre. Testing of this Teri can only be done with a special device called the ‘Aurora Viewer’ and it is used to measure the intensity of iridescent colors of the pearls. Only when it gets scored more than 90% then can it be certified as true TEN-NYO pearls.

This results in coating the foreign material with layer upon layer of shell material. That’s how a pearl is formed.

Cultivated seawater pearls such as Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian, are acquired using the same method too, though with a bit of human intervention.

To own a piece of pearl jewellery, one must appreciate how much effort and time is put in to produce it. From breeding the oysters to the culturing process and then onto the long wait to harvest them. The wait could take at least a year of growing the pearls inside the cultivated oysters for Akoya pearls and up to 4 years for South Sea and Tahitian pearls. Climate change and natural occurrences also plays a big part in the making of a pearl. Not forgetting that only a tin fraction of the nucleated oysters produces high quality pearls, thus making the natural gem even more precious.

The journey doesn’t stop there because next comes the sorting of these harvested pearls and the process of making them into the jewellery we see now. So as you can see, lots of time, effort and labour work goes into the making of a pearl.
