November Birthstone – Citrine & Topaz

If you are born in November, you are blessed with two ruling birthstone choices: Topaz & Citrine. These beautiful, precious gemstones come in an array of dazzling colors & are relatively affordable.

In 1912, American jewelers wanted to standardize birthstones. Modern birthstones are based on which is the easiest to sell in large quantities thus November has two birthstones. These elegant & exquisite stones can be found in abundance in most gem-stocking regions around the world, giving the impression of royalty & are among the more inexpensive birthstones sold today. In fact, Topaz was the original birthstone & Citrine was later added as a lower-priced option.

The word “topaz” is derived from the Sanskrit word “tapas” which means fire. It is a naturally occurring neo-silicate mineral that comes in a rainbow of colors. Topaz measures 8 on the Mohs scale & is therefore very durable! It also has a high refractive index so it sparkles & is perfect for a variety of jewelry options.

Measuring a 7 on the Mohs scale, citrine is durable, making it a practical choice for everyday wear & special occasions. The richer the hue of the citrine, the more desirable the birthstone.

Did you know that pink tourmaline is considered the modern birthstone for October? It was added when the National Association of Jewelers decided to create a list of accepted birthstones for each month in 1952.

Tourmaline is often called the “healer’s stone”. It is said to aid in communication, and imparting compassion, wisdom, acceptance and sympathy towards others. It also balances opposing types of energy and imparts self-confidence and serenity upon the wearer. Pink tourmaline attracts love and friendship.

Different colors of tourmaline are thought to have their own healing properties. Black tourmaline is believed to protect the wearer and give a sense of self-confidence. Pink tourmaline embodies love and is associated with compassion and gentleness

The September birthstone has traditionally symbolized sincerity, truth, faithfulness, and nobility. For countless centuries, sapphire has adorned royalty and the robes of the clergy. The elite of ancient Greece and Rome believed that blue sapphires protected their owners from harm and envy. Clerics of the Middle Ages wore sapphires because they symbolized Heaven. Ancient Persians believed the earth actually rested on a giant sapphire, which made the sky blue.

The September birthstone was reputed to have healing powers as well. Medieval Europeans believed that sapphire cured plague boils and diseases of the eye. The sapphire birthstone was also thought to be an antidote to poison.

Kashmir, Myanmar (formerly Burma), and Sri Lanka are three historically important sources for the September birthstone. Significant quantities of the September birthstone have also been found in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, and the United States (Montana), among other countries in Asia and Africa.

Sapphires that are not blue are known as fancy sapphires and may be any color—except red (which is a ruby). The fancy sapphire colors are pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, and violet.

Emerald, the birthstone for May, is a symbol of rebirth & renewal. The name is also derived from the word “smaragdus” meaning “Green” in Greek. The lush green stone is believed to grant the wearer good fortune, youth & foresight.

The precious stone is the perfect color for Spring. Prized for its brilliant & mesmerizing rich green hues, it has captured hearts & minds through the ages. It is a favorite stone by the famous & wealthy to wear as statement jewelry during special events.

Emerald has therapeutic properties as the comforting soft green relieves stress & eye strain.

The green birthstone was also once thought to have magical powers. Legends tell that Emeralds allowed the wearer to foretell the future. Some believed that by placing it under the tongue, the emerald could reveal the truth & ward off evil spirits. The gemstone was also used to cure diseases like malaria & cholera.

Emerald is associated with the heart chakra & has both healing effects on the physical & emotional heart. It brings loyalty, unity & unconditional love.

Colombia has the source of the finest emeralds & is the standard by which all others are measured. They are also the largest supplier, responsible for more than 60 percent of the world’s production. Countries like Brazil, Africa, India, Pakistan & Afghanistan are also important producers of the May birthstone.

The presence of chromium & sometimes vanadium gives emerald its beautiful green shade. The deeper or greener the emerald, the more valuable it is. The rarest will appear intense green-blue.

Emerald is a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness and thus is more susceptible to scratching. It is often treated to improve its color & clarity. It is important to avoid exposure to heat, harsh chemicals & changes in air pressure. Prevent the use of ultrasonic cleaner as the vibrations & heat can cause damage to the filled Emerald. The safest way to clean emeralds is to gently scrub them with a soft-bristled brush & warm, soapy water.

The name aquamarine signifies the sea itself, originating from the Roman words “aqua,” which means water, and “mare” which means sea water. Holding sacred meaning to Neptune, the god of the sea, Romans believed aquamarines were born from the bejeweled caskets of his sea sirens as they emerged upon the shore. Because its deep associations with the ocean, the aquamarine birthstone is known as the sailors’ gem, promising ancient mariners safe and fruitful journeys at sea. During World War II, the U.S. navy commissioned a coastal patrol yacht, naming it the USS Aquamarine as tribute to the beloved gemstone and its ties to the ocean. A favourite among royals and nobility as well, aquamarine was particularly treasured by Queen Elizabeth II who chose to wear a pair of stunning aquamarine earrings at her coronation in 1953.

Birthstone meanings are often a little more modern than the gemstone’s historical meaning. March’s birthstone encompasses the spirit of the ocean in its current context, representing both the exhilaration of crashing waves and the serenity of calmer tides. Many believe that it inspires understanding and deep communication between people, also bestowing courage and bravery upon its wearer.
